Is your dog going trick-or-treating with the kids this year? You don't need to spend $40 on something he'll wear for one evening. My pick for most dogs is the GOYOSWA vampire cape at $7.99. It ties at the neck, there's nothing to pull over the head, and it comes off in two seconds if he hates it. If you want the costume that gets the photos, get the DELIFUR cowboy rider at $15.29.
How I Picked These
I haven't put any of these on a dog myself, so I won't pretend I have. Here is how they made the list. Every costume was under $25 on Amazon on Oct 10, each one sells steadily and has a long record of owner feedback, and each listing gives real chest and neck measurements that you can check against your own dog before you order. If a seller only said "fits small dogs" and nothing else, it didn't go in.
I also dropped a pumpkin collar that looked cute. Its own listing called it an Easter design, which made me doubt the rest of the details.
Measure First
Most of these are sized by chest and neck, not by weight or breed. So take a soft tape and measure two things. The chest, at the widest part just behind the front legs. And the neck, where his collar sits. If he falls between two sizes, go one size up. A costume that is too tight is the one he'll try to chew off.
The 7 Costumes
1. GOYOSWA Vampire Cape, $7.99
A red and black cloak with a stand-up collar. It ties around the neck with cords, and that's all there is to it, which is exactly why it's my first pick for a dog who has never worn anything more than a collar and a harness. A dog who has never worn clothes will put up with a cape far more easily than a full outfit.
Sizes are S, L and XL. Small fits a neck of about 9 to 14 inches.
2. Puoyis Bat Wings, $5.99
The cheapest thing on this list. Black felt wings, about an ounce in weight. But read the size before you order. There is only one: chest 14 to 17 inches, neck 9 to 14 inches. The seller says it's made mainly for cats and small puppies. So this one is for a Chihuahua or a Yorkie, not your Lab.
3. Rypet Bat Wings, $9.99
Same idea, more sizes. These run XS to XL, covering a chest of about 15 to 22.8 inches and a neck of 10.6 to 16.1 inches. The felt is 5 mm thick, so the wings hold their shape instead of flopping. They close with velcro straps.
If your dog is too big for the Puoyis wings, buy these.
4. NACOCO Dinosaur Hoodie, $13.49
A yellow dinosaur hoodie. Well, it's really a dog sweatshirt with spikes on it, and that's the point. Your dog can keep wearing it on cold fall walks long after Halloween is over, so the $13.49 goes further than any of the other costumes on this list.
It has the widest range here, XS to 4XL. As a guide, XL is a 21-inch chest, 18-inch neck and 15-inch back, for dogs around 30 to 45 pounds. If your dog already wears sweaters, this is the easy choice.
5. DELIFUR Cowboy Rider, $15.29
This is the funny one. A small stuffed cowboy sits on your dog's back, so it looks like he's being ridden. The hat and bandana come off if he doesn't like them. It's made of polyester and non-woven fabric.
Sizes go XS to XL. Medium fits a chest of 20 to 26.5 inches and a neck of 12 to 18.5 inches, roughly 25 to 50 pounds. The seller says go by chest and neck, not weight.
It's my pick between $10 and $20, for a medium or large dog who doesn't mind a bit of bulk on his back.
6. ISMARTEN "Deadly Dog" Costume, $18.99
A padded body with arms and trouser legs, so from the side your dog looks like a small person in a horror outfit. It's cotton and polyester and stays on with two straps. It comes with a knife-shaped prop that attaches to the costume. I'd take that prop off before he wears it, especially if he chews things.
Small is a 16 to 20 inch chest (10 to 22 lb). Medium is 20 to 24 inches (22 to 44 lb). Large is 24 to 28 inches (44 to 66 lb). There's an XL too.
7. Rubie's Toy Story Jessie, $24.99
The only officially licensed costume here, and right at the $25 limit. You get a step-in shirt and a red hat with a yarn braid attached. Buy this one if the whole family is going as Toy Story. Otherwise the cape or the cowboy rider gives you more for less.
One warning from the seller: Rubie's pet sizes run smaller than regular pet clothes. So check the size chart on the listing. Sizes run S to XXXL, and XL is listed for dogs of about 30 to 45 pounds.
For Dogs Who Won't Wear Anything
Some dogs just won't. That's fine. These four let him join in anyway.
Milk-Bone MaroSnacks Halloween Edition, 25 oz, $7.48
The usual MaroSnacks in a limited-edition color: orange outside, black inside. A crunchy biscuit with a soft center made with real bone marrow. A 25 oz tub lasts a while.
Bocce's Bakery Spiced Cider Treats, 6 oz, $8.00
Soft and chewy, with only 10 ingredients, including oat flour, apple, cinnamon and cheese. Bocce's lists 13 calories per treat. Baked in the USA, no wheat, corn or soy, and no artificial preservatives. If your vet has your dog on a special diet, check the label first.
Baba&Nana Scarecrow Tug Toy, $17.49
Braided polar fleece in black and orange. The seller says it's for tug games with you, not for chewing alone. So play, then put it away.
QDAN Halloween Soccer Ball, $19.99
A soccer ball with nine nylon tabs he can grab. It ships flat, with a pump and needle in the box. It's listed for dogs of about 20 to 60 pounds and not for heavy chewers. The listing gives different ball sizes in different places (6 inches in one spot, 8 inches in another), so look at the size options on Amazon carefully before you pick one.
Who Should Skip What?
Skip the Puoyis wings if his chest is over 17 inches. There's no bigger size.
Skip the ISMARTEN costume if your dog panics when something touches his legs. It covers the most of him.
Skip the tug toy and the soccer ball if your dog destroys toys. Neither is made for chewing.
Skip all of them if he shakes, freezes or keeps scratching at it. Give him a treat and let him go as himself.
Is It Safe For Dogs To Wear Halloween Costumes?
Mostly yes, if you watch him. The ASPCA's advice is simple. The costume shouldn't stop him moving, seeing or breathing normally. Nothing should cover his face. Pull off any small or dangling bits he could chew off and swallow. And try it on a few days before Halloween, not at 6 PM on the 31st.
Never leave him alone in a costume. Take it off when you leave the room.
What Candy Is Dangerous For Dogs?
Chocolate, first of all. Dark and baking chocolate are the worst. Sugar-free candy and gum can contain xylitol, which is also seriously harmful to dogs. Dogs can sniff out a candy bowl anywhere, so keep it high up. If you think he ate any, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
How Do I Keep My Dog Calm On Halloween Night?
The doorbell rings all evening, strangers in masks keep showing up at the door and the kids are running in and out with bags of candy, so even a calm dog can get worked up. That's a lot for a dog. The ASPCA suggests a quiet room away from the front door during the busy hours, with a favorite toy or a food puzzle. Watch lit jack-o'-lanterns too, because one wag of the tail can knock a candle over. And check his ID tag and microchip details beforehand, in case he slips out the open door. If you walk him after dark, use a reflective collar or leash.
What Size Should I Buy If My Dog Is Between Sizes?
Go up one. Every seller here sizes by chest and neck, and a loose costume is easier to fix than a tight one. For the Rubie's costume, read the size chart twice, since the seller says it runs small.
Costumes sell out size by size as Halloween gets close. Measure your dog tonight and order this week.
